SLEEP APNEA CLAIM GUIDE

VA Sleep Apnea Claim Evidence: What to Organize

Sleep apnea requires medical evaluation. For claim organization, keep the diagnosis and sleep-study evidence separate from the evidence addressing why the condition is claimed as related to service or another service-connected disability.

Evidence to organize

Sleep-study results, diagnosis, treatment records, and prescribed therapy information.

Service treatment records or other service records relevant to sleep complaints, symptoms, exposures, or events when applicable.

Lay observations of snoring, breathing interruptions, daytime fatigue, or other firsthand observations when relevant.

Medical evidence addressing the claimed relationship to service or another service-connected condition when that relationship is at issue.

Questions to map before review

  1. 01What objective testing supports the diagnosis?
  2. 02When were symptoms first observed or documented?
  3. 03What treatment has been prescribed and what records document it?
  4. 04What evidence addresses the claimed connection rather than only the existence of the condition?
Educational, not diagnostic
